The Great Gatsby Cover Artwork

The cover of The Great Gatsby is among the most celebrated pieces of jacket art in American Literature. An artist named Francis Cugat was commissioned to illustrate the novel while Fitzgerald was in the midst of writing it. The cover was completed before the novel. Fitzgerald was so enamored of it he told the artist he had "written it into" the novel.

Assignment: Study the artwork by Cugat. What are some of the symbols you see? What is going on in the painting? Can you make any inferences about the novel based on the cover art??
****Minimun 100 words.

  1. In this painting I see that on the bottom it goes from little houses to an explosion of color and the colors are what I presume are the high-class areas. I also see what looks fire in the eyes and I think that shows the danger in wanting to be in the higher class of society. I think the lighter blue below the eye is a teardrop. There are beautiful eyes and almost perfect lips which tells me in the novel those will become prevalent the orange reminds me of an explosion so maybe there will be an explosion in there somewhere. The houses to all the colors tells me that someone in the novel will change who they are to become rich and sophisticated.

  2. In this painting by Cugat, the first thing that I see is the outline of a woman. The woman that is drawn has a lot of makeup around her eyes and lipstick, which maybe means that she is a flapper. Her eyes are drooping however and there is a tear running down one side of her face. Something had not gone right for her or how she had planned. This could be what happens in the story. In the story, a young flapper might think she has everything planned out but then realizes she was wrong. Also, the woman has a headband on with three jewels on one side. This could mean that she is wealthy and comes from a respected family during this time. Behind the woman, there is a scene drawn of a carnival or fair at night. All of the bright lights show that it is a very popular place and there is a lot going on there. The rides at the carnival are also very large and therefore are probably in a big city. I think this city is New York City because during the 1920s, NYC was a very popular place that had all of the new innovations that people were seeking. When they are put together, I see a young girl who moves to NYC to try and make a life for herself. I also think that she then gets caught up in everything around her and loses who she really is as a person.

  3. In this painting one of the symbols that I see is the face in the sky, this face is from what I can see a woman and she has a lot of makeup on and could be a flapper. The woman also looks like she has a tear rolling down her face. Another thing that I noticed was all of the lights in the city. The way they are portrayed kind of makes it look like an amusement park. These could represent the bright future that you have if you come to America. It also looks like all of the lights are near the edge of water, perhaps on a beach. This could be Ellis Island, where immigrants come into the country. There are also a lot of black lines in the sky. These could be the wind blowing, or maybe the outline of the woman’s figure. What is happening in the painting is that America is always alive and having fun and it looks as if this one girl is excluded from all of that and that’s why she is sad. From looking at the cover and I can say that in the novel I expect there to be some sort of woman who is cast away from the rest of society and gets depressed because of that. The wind in the sky could show that she is just trying to let it take her away from everything that is going on.

Some of the symbols I see are very obvious, and I think that some are more vague. For example, most of the painting is blue. I believe that blue represents grief and misery. I’m sure that there are more symbols in this piece, but that is the only one that is clear to me. The eyes look distressed by the way they’re shaped, and if I’m not mistaken, it looks like there is a teardrop running from the left eye. Speaking of the eyes, inside of them are people who are forming the shape. I have no idea what this could mean. Looking at the entire picture, the whole face looks like a flapper with striking lips in reality, because on the book cover, the lips are very prominent to me. There are many different lines all over the cover, and I’m sure this has a meaning, but I don’t know what exactly. At the bottom, reading from left to right, it looks like a city. It looks like the city was a little, old nothing at the beginning, but it soon began to grow and grow and eventually ends up like New York at night. From this piece, I believe the person on the cover is a flapper the Fitzgerald is in love with, but she doesn’t give him the time a day because she is an extremely famous flapper who happens to live in the big city at the very right of the book cover. I can’t make out why she’s sad, but going along with these assumptions, the eyes tend to look manipulative with an eye-catching smile she uses to her advantage. I also made these inferences with prior knowledge to Fitzgerald, I think that this flapper is Zelda.

  5. The Great Gatsby cover initially makes me sad. In my opinion it has a somewhat dismal mood to it. It looks like a big collage of many different things with great meaning to them coming together as a whole. The focal point is obviously the face in the middle. The eyes and mouth are the only visible features but they are very distinct. The eyes have an almost disappointed or letdown- look to them. In the actual eyes the yellow shapes might be people or may just be a reflection. They eyes have quite a bit of makeup on them as do the lips, which infers that the lady is a flapper; knowing a little bit of background knowledge, Gatsby takes place in the 1920’s and flappers were a big part of that time period. The left eye looks as if it is crying, which contributes to the sorrowful feeling. The setting of the painting looks as it is at a fair or carnival. Going from left to right at the bottom, the dark, dull neighborhood suddenly exploding into an area of brilliant colors and excitement may resemble something that happened in the 1920’s. There are abstract shapes in the middle ground but I’m not sure what they may stand for. The random lines all over may be the outline of the woman or they may be part of something else. On the very right side of the painting, the scenery dies down and looks lifeless again. From what I know, this painting has a great deal to do with the story line and meaning of The Great Gatsby.

  6. This painting is very complex because there are many different things going on throughout the painting. When I look at this painting, the first thing that I see is a woman’s face in the sky. There are lines around her eyes and mouth to help form the face. The woman’s eyes have an almost gold color to them and look like they have something in them. It looks like she has makeup around her eyes and lipstick on her lips. There is a long mark below her left eye that appears to be a tear. The top half of the painting seems to be sad and gloomy but the bottom half is exciting and bright. In the bottom of the painting I first see a circle of lights that look like a Ferris wheel. It also looks like there is an explosion to the left of the Ferris wheel. This reminds me of the “ Roaring 20s” because the town looks very busy.

  7. In Francis Cugat’s painting I see a woman whom looks maybe a bit sad and in the background it looks like a city. So I’m guessing she lives in a big city with a lot of lights and very busy. There looks like an explosion in the bottom middle of the cover so maybe fireworks or a war. The woman also looks like she is crying. There also seems to be the letter “T”, I’m not quite sure what that means. Maybe she lives in Texas or Tennessee or something. I think the cover shows that the entire book is about this woman’s life and shows how bad she thinks she has it.

  8. The symbols that I see in the painting describe a sad, deeply thoughtful woman who, despite the activity and excitement around her, feels sorrowful. The deep blue of the sky symbolizes the sadness while the carnival lights below represent that the world is happy and carefree unlike this women. Another example of her feelings is the green tear running down her face. The lips with heavy makeup and the black around the eyes tells me that she is much like Judy Jones from “Winter Dreams” in that she knows she is attractive and uses that to string along a group of men. The look she has is almost seductive, further establishing that she is like Judy Jones. The novel itself is probably about 2 people where the guy is in love with her but the women moves around to see all the “fish in the sea” before committing to one relationship.

  9. The picture includes a girl who looks to be beautiful because of the bright red lips and the dark eye make up however if you look deeper her hair is blowing in a direction as if taking away her riches and beauty. Her eyes at a simple glance are sweet and gold but if you look closer they are clouded and tearful. It is as if she is hiding something. She can persuade you to think fondly of her but at the same time she is suffering. The green steak looks as though a tear falling from her eye and the shading of the blue looks like a body.
In the background there is a city. A city of lights and you can almost hear the sounds of a modern day New York City. It makes you think that there is a reason for her becoming someone she isn’t and hiding who she is. The city has torn her down to what she truly is but few have seen that happen because she puts on her make up and pretends that she is perfect. The colors of the city are bright because they are deceiving. Bright is usually happy but in all reality the bright lights are changing to some people, like the girl. They are the symbol of want instead of need. She wants to be perfect and she wants to be rich when she needs to be herself.

  10. The painting is about a figure in the sky with two eyes no nose lips and a green tear on the left side of her face, and a faint out lining of her head. The floating head is crying over an amusement park. And in her easy are two people. The easy inferences I can make are some thing bad is going to happen at the amusement park. And the two people in her eyes are the two people she loves.so over all some thing is going to happen at the amusement park and it involves two people.

  11. In Cugat’s artwork the whole cover is blue. The lady has glossy eyes and a teardrop running down her face. There is also something in her eyes, maybe people, maybe who she wants to be? She could also be sad. Her lips are bright red but she has no nose. Maybe she talks a lot and has a big mouth or possibly has a winning smile. At the bottom of the cover however, it is very bright and colorful showing city lights. Maybe this lady wants to be important in this “colorful” city. In her eyes she’s watching someone in particular in the city. It could be whom she is admiring to be like.

  12. I see many symbols for the cover art for The Great Gatsby. The first thing I noticed of course was the woman’s face. Then, I noticed that she has tears coming down her face. Her eyes look sad, and it looks like there are naked ladies in her eyes? Her red lips could mean that she is young. She is also wearing make up, which younger women starting doing in the 1920s. The dark blue on the cover looks like a night sky. The bright yellow colors below the face remind me of city lights. The ground looks like it could be on a shore or coastline somewhere. Like in the 1920’s, cities were booming, and the economy was prospering. Perhaps the way that the “lights” start out small and then get bigger on the cover could show the rising action and climax of the story. Then, the lights get small again, showing the conclusion.

  13. One symbol I see in this painting is the lines in the sky. These represent the woman’s hair. Another symbol I see is a tear falling from one eye. This is showing that the woman is upset. Another symbol I see is in the eyes there is either a person or fire. This could stand for anger or that the woman is in love with someone.
In the painting there is a carnival going on. Also there is a bright light at the bottom of the painting. It could also be an explosion. There is also a woman that is upset.
An inference that I can make about the book based on the cover work is that there is a girl that is upset. Also that there is a carnival in the book.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In the woman’s eyes there are people, which could symbolize her looking down on others. The carnival below her could symbolize freedom in life and having a good time. In the painting you can see carnival lights and what appears to be a Farris wheel. It shows behind that what appear to be city lights so the story may take place in a big city. The woman also has a wrap or scarf on her head as well as makeup, typical of flappers during this time. The streak on her cheek could be a tear. The woman is above the carnival and everything else so you could infer that she is going to be the most important in the novel or that she will be the one that everyone wants to be with or like. She is also wearing a scarf like the flappers wore in the 1920’s so she may be one of the more popular flappers in the city. This painting could represent what the whole book is about.

  15. The cover to the book The Great Gatsby on first sight portrays a sad or depressed theme. The first thing that is seen are the eyes of a young looking girl. She doesn’t look happy but as if she is daydreaming. There’s a tear staining the sky, it’s background, also giving the impression of loneliness and wandering. There are no other details of her besides few random black streaks that could represent the hairline. Below her face are blurring shapes that resemble brightly lit buildings or a carnival. The entire scene is placed upon a deep midnight blue background so as to outline and draw attention to the sad, light blue, mesmerizing, eyes of this young woman. I think the artist was trying to be symbolic, more than anything, through this piece by inferring the sadness that The Great Gatsby will introduce. The artist drew the viewers’ attention to the eyes where lots of emotion is assumed. In addition to this symbolism, after looking closer, there is one woman in each blue eye. The reason for this is unknown but I think the artists motive will become clear later in the novel as the story of this girl unfolds.

  16. The painting is confusing to me. I don’t understand it. The only think I think I know is the face. I think the face is the girls face in the story. The blue background makes me think that the tone is a sad down tone. But then the bright colorful objects at the bottom of the page makes me think there is a small spurt of happiness in the story. The bottom of the page looks like a bright little city. Inside the eyes of the painting it looks like there is afire or people. It also looks like there is a tear falling down the ladies face. The face looks like there is makeup around the eyes and lipstick on the lips. I also noticed that the upper half of the painting looks like it is depressing and then the bottom half looks happy.

  17. As I look at the Cugat’s painting, there are many things I noticed. One thing I saw was the colors. The main part of the painting is blue. Blue represents sadness. There is a silver stripe that’s running down her face, which I think could be a tear. Based on the symbols of sadness, it makes it seem like the story is going to be sad or something tragic may happen. The next thing I noticed were the black lines above the eyes and below the mouth. It give the image that it is an abstract shape of a head. The closer I look at her eyes I can tell there is make-up on them and on her lips. She has bright red lips, which would mean she is wearing lipstick. Since she is wearing make-up, it makes me think she is a flapper (like Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda). In here eyes there a small, naked people to make up color in her eye. The people are in very awkward and unnatural body positions. Another thing I noticed was many bright spatters of color. If you look really close, it makes it look like a down, where a dance hall may be located. Since the cover makes her look like a flapper, a dance hall would be an appropriate picture to be on the cover.

  18. A symbol that I see is a face, I think that this face is going to be a big character in this book. I think that it’s a woman, and she will be pretty and somewhere around the lines of being a flapper. Representing Zelda, Fitzgerald’s wife. She may not be a Flapper, but I think that she doesn’t believe in herself so she has a low self-esteem. She wears make up to make herself look as good as she can. There is also a tear so inside I think that she is unhappy with herself, her actions, and her life. There are these lights, which I think they are buildings. They remind me of New York buildings like in winter Dreams with Dexter and Judy. Also the city lights may represent that the characters enjoy the city lights and city life. The characters live this fancy life in the big city when maybe what they crave is having a small town with a family enjoying being together. I also see what looks to be some type of explosion, which I think means some kind of war. Whether this war being an actual war or just a verbal one. In the Characters eyes there are some things that look like interesting people. They look as if they could be dancing or laying down. A background color that is blue can represent many things, depression, and grief. They colors of the cover represent feelings of the characters.

  19. you see the eyes of a woman staring directly at you you see the background blurred but still recognizable as a city bustling at night you can see the shape of the woman's face. The only details you can truly see though of her are of her eyes and her lips and somehow these to human features show humanity although their missing a face, its human perspective and yet they still form an emotion an almost begging helpless face staring right at you. It captivates and intrigues you it makes you want know what this apparition of human emotion wants and needs and ultimately is a personification of the story inside the book itself. Gleaming with eyes pointed toward you watching, waiting, wanting.

  20. Some of the symbols that I see on the Great Gatsby cover are eyes, and a tear, I think that it is a women crying because there are really bright red lips. In the bottom right hand corner it looks like a city, or a party, the lights may be fireworks above the city I think, that the women is looking over at. I think that the city is where most of the story takes place. It looks like the women could be at the party crying or in the city crying. The city looks like it’s of high-class people, maybe some middle class. The town looks really dark on one side of the cover and really bright on the other so on the dark sides it might be were the lower or the middle class people live, or where there are no parties. I think that the book may be about what is happening in the city, and how the women takes it all in. It looks like the story could be taken place at night because the cover is dark blue. The dark blue cover could also mean sadness. The story may be about what life is like in the city or at a party at night.

  21. At first glace the cover of The Great Gastby looks like random shapes and colors placed in an artistic way. If one takes a closer look at this painting a face appears in the sky. This is a symbol of perhaps the woman watching over what is happening down below. The woman looks somewhat sad, yet there are flames in her eyes, which symbolizes determination. Under one of her eyes, is what looks like a firework or something similar. But in the big picture it looks like a tear running down the woman in they sky’s face. The scene below, to me, looks like a carnival or fair with all the different sizes and colors of light. From this cover one can infer that this story is about a woman’s life and struggle.

  22. Some symbols I see in the artwork are the face, the teardrop, and the city. I think the face and tear is a symbol of sadness. The city looks like it is on fire. The fire seems like a symbol for a lot of tension in the city. I think in the painting, the face is the general public. The teardrop on the face is green. I think it is the overall emotion for the city, the emotion of sadness. Also at he bottom of the painting, the city looks like New York and it looks like fire or like a bomb.

  23. The easiest way to discover the meaning of this art is by the colors. The Primary colors, (mostly blue) pop out and are very vivid. The deep blue is very almost sad, very gloomy. That feeling is contrasted with the vivid colors in the bottom right, looking like the bright colors of a city. The face could almost be either a man or a woman, but judging by the lips it’s a woman. There are wispy streaks of black all around the face, which could be either hair for the face, or like a wind for the city. There is also a teal light blue tear on the side of the face, which makes her look unhappy, with herself or her life. In the eyes looks like two angels or women, twisting to form the shapes of pupils, which could mean either innocence, or like twisting what the woman sees. I think this art symbolizes there will be a great sadness among all the life of the city.

  24. I notice quite a few interesting symbols that are shown in the cover page. The colors are a huge symbol because they used dark and calm colors such as blue to show sadness. Also it looks as if there is a tear running down her cheek as she sadly looks at the amusement park. Also, I noticed that her figure is blue which implies sadness, but the amusement park is bright and exciting. This lead me to think that she is alone, depressed, and apart from the more "exciting life". Once i look at it closer and in more detail, it looks as if there may be a fight of some sort because it looks like a big explosion. And once i look at it with that prespective, she may be looking down in the city with sadness, knowing that it will all be gone. The blue background may represent the sadness all around her as well as the sadness within herself.

  25. In this painting, I notice that it’s night and the city lights are bright and eye-catching. This could symbolize that even in Great Gatsby’s dark life, there is still light. The main face in the painting could symbolize a woman who is very important in Great Gatsby’s life, perhaps the reason his life is dark. There are random lines (that may not be so random, they could have meaning) that surround the face. The bright lights look a little like fireworks. The inferences I made about the novel based on the cover art are that it might be depressing (because of it being night) but also happy and exciting at times (because of the bright lights). The novel could be mysterious because it seems like the face is trying to hide from something by blending into the night. Overall, I would read this book because I want to know who the creepy face is and why Great Gatsby’s life is so dark.

  26. The first thing I notice when I look at this painting by Cugat is a woman's face. She is wearing heavy eye makeup and red lipstick. She is most likely a flapper, which tells me that the story is set in the 1920s. The woman does not look particularly happy, and she is crying. I think the book will probably have a tragic, melancholy undertone. There are lights at the bottom of the picture that look like a city, a big city like New York or Chicago. It also looks like there is an explosion, which to me reads war and anger. Perhaps it is not an actual war, but a war between two characters, or an internal war between one character and himself. The use of color is interesting. Blue could symbolize sadness or loss possibly. Based on the symbols on the cover, I am guessing that this story will probably be sad and filled with interesting conflict.

  27. On the Great Gatsby cover, there is a lot of symbols. I see a lot of lines and shapes that kind of make up a face. There is a mouth and two eyes that look like they are crying because there is a teardrop below them. Below the face there is a big city and lots of lights. The lights look like an explosion or fireworks maybe. Out past the beach are rough waves. The eyes look like they are a girls’, probably the flapper in the story. The eyes also look very sad. The cover is also somewhat dark except for the lights from the city

  28. In Cugat’s painting I see made-up eyes in the sky. The eye’s I assume symbolize a flapper considering flappers during the 1920’s wore lots of makeup. Below the eyes is a tear that represents sadness, something tragic or sad that happened to the flapper. At the bottom of the painting there’s many colors, which make the painting feel more exciting. The place in the painting looks similar to a carnival, which symbolizes the fun, exciting, extravagant lifestyle of the 20’s. The bright blue background overwhelms the painting; I think the blue symbolizes sadness or grief. The carnival looks like a popular fun place to be during the 1920’s. I think the novel is about a young, beautiful, wealthy flapper who doesn’t have the fabulous life she presumes to have. There’s an event or something life changing that happens to her to make her depressed.

  29. There are many symbols in the artwork of Cugat. In the painting there is a face, but not an entire out line of a face, only the eyes and lips. I believe this symbolizes a woman. There is also a tear running down her face, which could symbolize her being sad or miserable. At the bottom of the painting, there are also blurs of color and shapes, which I believe could symbolize a booming city or even something much bigger, like a culture. From these symbols, it makes me wonder if this woman is forced to fit certain expectations or ideals of the city life, or the culture.

  30. The first thing I see when I look at the cover of The Great Gatsby is the women’s face. Some of the other symbols I see that there is women faded into the sky and there is a tear coming from her eye, I think the tear represents sadness that the women has. What is going on in this painting is there are a women’s face in the sky an on the ground it looks like a city. The women has eyes and lips, but they rest of her is faded into the sky. I think her being faded into the sky represents her fading into the crowd. The cover is mostly blue, which I think is very gloomy and sad.

  31. In this painting by Cugat there are many different symbolic things to which he is representing. When first looking at this picture you see the face of a woman who is most likely a flapper based on her thick make-up and thin lines used to represent her hair. Looking closer at this woman you get a glimpse of her life. Down at the bottom you the lights of a city exploding with color. Bright and colorful gives the illusion of a happy life however as you move up towards the eyes of the painting you see the lights start to fade a deeper tone of blue makes the background. Blue is often thought of as a depressing color adding and element of sadness and discontentment found. Under her left eye there is a light blue streak almost as to represent a tear. I believe this tear is in regards to the life she lives, which can be symbolized trough, the unclothed women we see in her eyes who appear to be flappers. I can infer thru this art that the book is about a woman, possibly a flapper, who while her life is fun; magical, and bright is still unhappy.

  32. Some symbols I see on the cover of “The Great Gatsby” by: Scott Fitzgerald are a city with buildings, and power lines right below what appears to be the skyline. There are also several bright yellow flashes which appears to be an explosion and in the sky are the giant eyes and mouth without a face perhaps that of a woman. Based on the cover art I think the novel may be about a woman or someone growing up in a city during a war or maybe even post war. and I think that the eyes and mouth in the sky may symbolize the death of someone because the face is looking down from the sky and the eyes seem like they might be crying.

  33. In this painting I see a woman with a teardrop on her face. This tells me that there is a woman who becomes very sad in the book. She has lots of make-up around her eyes and lots of lipstick on it tells me she might be a flapper. At the bottom of the painting I see what looks like a group of houses on fire, which could represent a group of certain people who many others do not like. Her eyes are the color of the fire. This could symbolize her maybe being in the group of people or houses that is on fire.

  34. On the cover of the Great Gatsby I see many symbols and one of these symbols is the face, I think it represents a female character in the book, and a very sad character. This female face seems to be the face of a flapper, by the short hair to the side. The woman also is wearing a headband that has three identical jewels on it which also leads me to thinking she is a flapper. I believe those are tears coming from the face of the female and that gives me the impression that she is sad, this gives the image a depressing feel. The eyes of the face seem to have a fire in them, which could represent envy or passion of the flapper. There is also a city in the painting, which is very bright and seems to be a very populated area and busy atmosphere. The lights seem to get brighter like an explosion of yellow color, which could just be a very bright populated area. The ground before the city seems to be pavement like, leading up to the city going from black to a sandy white right before the city. There are many random marks, lights, and circles in the painting that confuse me. From the cover I can infer that the book will be about a young girl possible a flapper living in a large city that has a passion for something. I might guess that this girl could be depressed, and slightly rebellious by the way she looks.

  35. In this painting by the first thing I notice are the eyes of a woman. There is a faint outline of her hair and the side of her face; she has a mouth and eyes but no nose. There is a green tear that would be running down her cheek, if it were visible. It looks like there is a scarf or headband wrapped around her head. To me that shows that she is a gypsy woman. Beneath the woman it looks like there is an amusement park. All the bright colors of it show that it a place where people can be carefree and just have fun. Then looking at the woman I can infer that what happens to her at the amusement park was very tragic.

  36. On the cover I see many symbols relating to many different things. I see a sad face and shows sympathy and sorrow. The face even has tears showing some sort of pain of discomfort. But what’s weird is the sad face is right above the lights of New York City, which NYC is supposed to be a happy place full of fun adventures. The sad face above the city symbolizes to me that the person is sad about the environment of the city or something like that. The eye in the sky symbolizes the flappers in the 20’s, which were whores who work make up and short dresses. The city symbolizes a fair, which means fun and adventures like how life was back then. The blue background is also it’s own symbol, blue symbolizes as sadness of grief due to the face something tragic happened

  37. There is a women on the front cover she is crying, she is sad about something. It being the ‘20s the women is probably a flapper. In the women’s eyes there is a body of a person in each eye, I’m not sure what it means it could mean a lot of of things I think you might have witnessed a death and she can’t get it out of her head it might be why she’s crying. And I think at the bottom those are light s from a city, to possibly show the roaring ‘20s, and the economic boom that occurred during the time along with other cultural changes.

  38. On the cover of The Great Gatsby, I see a women with a lot of makeup on her eyes, and bright lipstick. But you can see that her eyes look sad, and she has a tear running down her face. I think this symbolizes a girl in the book, who may be a flapper, who is very sad. Down below the women, you can see that there are lights shining. It may be a big city, or it may be something like a carnival, which represents the fun during the 1920’s.

  39. The symbols I see in this painting are a lady over a variety of different colors that represent a city of different types of people. What I mean by the different types of people is from rich to poor. The brighter and higher colors are the rich people and the lower and duller colors are the poor people. The lady’s tear is running down into the poorer area because she is poor. I can say that she is very upset that she is poor. She wants to be like the rich people. Dress like them, look like them, act like them, and talk like them.

  40. When I observe the cover my eye drifts to the face, a stone cold expression laid upon it, yet the eyes say something different... They look saddened by something, maybe afraid, yet trying to hide this fear behind a metaphorical mask. There is what appears to be a green tear, tears signify sadness yet this is green, the colour of envy. The foreground shows a carnival, joyous, filled with lights and games. I'm lead to believe that this story may have something to do with what emotions are not seen by looking at someone. I'd also expect one of the scenes in the book to be a festival of some sort.

  41. The cover of great Gatsby is filled with symbols and interpretations. With just a quick glance one may just set the book aside and decide that it is just another book but with a little closer examination meaning is pouring through the ink. The face which is obviously female (or a vary strange man) is crying with a sad look in her eyes, coupled with the blue background a vary Mellow and sad feeling emanates from the book. Underneath the woman’s face in the distance is a bright bussing city full of life and lights. Strangely though the way the lights are mostly composed of a bright red yellow and orange seems to express fire as if the cities with a flaming energy or the energy is burring the city. The tear on the right side of her face looks like a tower in the city but reveals its true form since it shares the same color as the tear on the left side. The right tear appears to be putting out the fire of lights in the city below. This may represent the plot in which a woman helps put the fire of the city metaphorically speaking out through a series of tragic events that are probably caused by the men in her life.

  42. Well………In this painting I can see that the eyes are heavily lined and distant in color. This could possibly mean that the character or symbol they are portraying is aloof and mysterious. Also, there is a touch of solemnity behind the eyes, almost as if they were hurt, hence the illuminant green teardrop lying beneath them. Completing the partialness of the face is a pair of perfect smackers that seem pursed. The face is striking yet nondescript all in once leaving an overall feeling of mystery. The fact that the face lies in the sky above a brightly lit carnival scene is something to ponder. How does the face relate to the carnival? Is it a person attending the carnival? Is it simply a feeling regarding the carnival? Is the carnival meant to mean something bigger such as the ups and downs of life? I feel as though the carnival brings a juvenile presence to the image. The carnival shows a feeling of growing up and maturing from childhood while the deep blue nighttime sky shows the overall darkness that shadows the growth into adulthood.

  43. The teardrop coming from her left eye is a symbol for the feeling sadness. The seriousness of her two lips symbolizes anger or sadness also. The girl is the sky as if the sky is angry with the town and her hair is symbolizing wind like a storm. The bright light in the middle of the picture represents the last glow of hope for this town maybe. The city half gone represents the part of the town that has left, or been abandoned, or maybe even destroyed by a disaster caused by the woman in the sky. This novel may be about a girl who was killed, she’s in the sky, and the town covered up her murder to save each other, so she is angry and causes bad things to happen to the town and specific people in it.

  44. There are many symbols going on in the cover of The Great Gatsby. The first things I really notice are the colors, and the back round of it all. The color blue really takes over the book and screams sadness, and depression. There at the bottom there are shiny yellow lights, to me that symbolize happiness and fun. Back to the top there is a face, the face looks upset and worried about something that’s going on with her. In the corner there is a bright happy city, maybe even a carnival were everyone is having a good time. My inference to this book would be maybe she isn’t welcome to the fun bright city and that’s why she is upset, maybe she was an outcast and becomes famous in the process of being in the city. It’s hard to make an inference on a cover for me.

  45. In the painting the woman is a flapper you can tell because of her makeup in each of her eyes there is a tiny person in them. I’m pretty sure she is crying because her eyes look sorrowful and the lighter blue beneath her left eye is more then likely tears. The blue background doesn’t help the feel of sadness either. The colors at the bottom could represent how the twenties were thriving or roaring, because on one side the colors are small and then grow to be a splash of colors. And as the bit of color gets bigger more color there is in it. I don’t really know what that has to do with it but that’s just something I noticed.

  46. Some of the symbols that I see is the busy city and bright lights showing the 20’s as a fun, bright, and carefree time. Or the city is undergoing destruction, construction or an explosion. Like the explosion could be the economy going up. The women on the cover could represent a flapper of that time period. The thing that is happening is there is a woman looking over the city and the city could be under an attack and the woman is just there watching sad. I can infer that this story could potentially be about a city and a woman in this particular city. Something will happen to this woman on the cover, something that may change her life.

  47. In Francis Cugat’s painting, a dark cobalt sky is the backdrop for a sad, depressing woman’s face, which is painted into the night. With out any other contours to her faces, the eyes and lips are the focus of this painting. I believe that the dark, makeup rimmed eyes and orange tinted lips symbolize a woman, perhaps even a young flapper. There is a green streak of paint that runs down her invisible cheek, which I believe, symbolizes a tear. To me this tear is a gateway into her life and lets the viewer take a glimpse of why she might appear to be so sad. At the bottom of this painting is what appears to be a city of lights and color. It seems that the front of the lights seems to be the brightest as if it was an explosion of color. To me this painting is a symbol which we will not understand completely until we read the novel.

  48. In the painting of The Great Gatsby there are many symbols in it. In the background, I see a woman with her hair being blown around her. Her eyes are beautiful but they have a very sad look to them. There is also a tear falling down her face because of what has happen below her. Below her is a city that seems to be under attack or something but whatever it is, the outcome was not good. She seems sad of what is happening below her. By looking at this I can tell she is a flapper with a depressing story to tell. From inferring I tell that her story is tragic and very depressing.

  49. In the cover art of the book the Great Gatsby, I found some interesting symbols. The first thing I noticed about this piece of art was what appears to be a woman’s face, possibly a flapper due to her headband, which has three transparent beads hanging from it. Her lips are a subtle red, and she’s glamorous looking. In this woman’s eyes, there’s a splash of golden light in her eyes. She appears quite sad, because there’s a beam of pale blue light under her eyes, which I believe to be a tear on her cheek. You are able to see the emotion and vintage beauty in this woman’s eyes. Under this woman’s face, there’s a city filled with multicolored lights, fireworks and black wires rushing through it. This, I believe, symbolizes the rush of the city she’s in and the radiance of the Roaring 20s.

  50. Francis Cugat’s cover art for The Great Gatsby is a powerful piece of artwork. The first thing that draws my attention are the eyes. They are heavily done up, as are the lips, which looks like she could be a high-class lady. However, she looks unhappy, and there is a marking below her right eye, which looks to me like a tear running down the face. In here eyes I see something like birds, but I can’t tell whether they are doves or eagles. The doves could represent peace while the eagle could represent both freedom and the American Dream. Below her is an explosion of color from what looks like a fair; one big party in the roaring twenties. But the lights look more like firecrackers or explosions. That could mean anger or triumph, depending on the circumstances. Judging by the look on her face I think it is anger or some other strong, negative emotion. Going along with emotion, I looked at the colors. A good portion of the jacket is cool colors, mainly blue. The color blue is generally connected to emotions such as grief, sorrow, depression, etc. But then there come some warm colors, like the yellows and reds, which I see as perhaps passion, either angry or lustful. This to me seems like there is a sort of love-hate relationship between the characters in the novel.

  51. There are many symbols in this painting. The first ones I notice are the face, the explosions at the bottom, the teardrop and at the bottom, it looks like a small city. In the painting, there is a person crying with people in the eyes. There is what looks like diagrams or drawings on the entire cover and they are kind of in a sporadic order, yet organized. Under the eyes is a teardrop, which has fallen from the right eye. There is only one though, so this could show that it is saddening, but gets better or vise versa. At the bottom, there are lights and bursts that could show bombs going off or the destroying of a city. Based on the cover I think the book will be about two people who see things in the same way, but they can’t get any closer. Also, that it will have something to do with violence in a city, and how people try to find different ways to solve on problem and so that ends in violence.

  52. The first things I notice about the cover are the eyes. They seem to have maybe a flame in her eye as if she is very determined to complete something. I notice around her pupil in her eye there is a blue watery color unlike a normal eye that would be white. I think this might mean that though she is determined she is struggling with what she is trying to accomplish and that she may be hurt by this or by someone and this is causing her to tear up and maybe even cry. I also notice towards the bottom of the cover there is an explosion of a yellowish light. It seems to me that it might be a carnival. Although when I look at it again it seems to be a city that is wild fun and most importantly expensive. I notice to the right of the yellowish explosion that there seems to be another city although this one is dim, more reserved and most likely poor. With these facts I infer that the main struggle in this story is to become recognized in the richer society when the main character most likely lives in the poorer class and is looked down upon by the rich.

  53. One of the major symbol I see is the tear, I think it symbolizes the dream of big cities and the american dream. There are naked people in the ladys eyes and I think that they symbolize lust and the danger of big cities and the lust involved in them. I also see the lit up city at the bottom and I think this is showing that she lives in a big city where things are always happening and it is never quite. In the picture there is a face drawn over the city to symbolize the role of women in this time. I think that the cover says that a lot is going to be going on in the story and she will barley ever rest. I think the cover shows something really sad will also happen.

  54. The original cover of the book seemed to show the carnival, which expressed having a fun time. The face of the woman is very gorgeous, and shows that she is dolled up for an occasion, yet there's something sad about her (the tear). Although the 1920's were booming, there later was a depression causing pain to almost everyone in the country. I think maybe the crying face symbolized that not everyone was as happy as they seemed during the 1920's.
